If I were to list all the card tricks that are suitable for club, cabaret and stand-up performances and can be enjoyed by children then Tommy Tucker’s ‘Six-Card Repeat’ would be high, if not the top, on the list.
It has everything mystery, novelty, humour and a delightful patter story. Several versions have been marketed over the years since Tucker introduced his original short card method.
Eventually I made myself a children’s version using children’s picture cards which is what I offer here.
The Effect: You are holding a number of picture cards in your left hand and the cards are slowly counted from hand to hand, “One, two, three, four, five and one, is six cards”. The cards are transferred back into your left hand and then three cards are counted away and dropped into your pocket or an upturned hat, box, champagne bucket etc.
The cards in your left hand are counted again and prove to be, “One, two, three, four, five and one, is six cards”.
To an amusing line of patter the effect is repeated again and again. Six cards are counted from hand to hand, three cards are discarded. Still six cards remain. It is a surprising and novel effect which has truly stood the test of time!
Basic Patter Story: "The other day I saw a magician on the television/at a club who took one, two, three, four, five and one, is six cards. From these cards he took away one, two, three – three cards and dropped them into his pocket.
When he counted the cards again he still had one, two, three, four, five and one is six cards, and all the audience shout Hurrah! As you say the last line punch your fist in the air. You audience will soon get the idea and start to do likewise.
"I was most impressed by this, so I went along to a magic shop where they sell these things and said, ‘Did you see the magician last night on TV? He took one, two, three, four, five and one, is six cards. From these he counted one, two, three – three cards and dropped them into his pocket. When he counted the cards again he still had one, two, three, four, five and one, is six cards, and all the audience shout hurrah !’
This is of course repeated a number of times the magic and fun building with each repeat of the effect.
