Red Balloon Mystery
Red Balloon Mystery

During the 1960s I was resident entertainer in the famous Trentham Gardens, Stoke-on-Trent near to where I then lived, mostly performing outdoors and on rainy days inside their big, fabulous ballroom. My show was for all ages and Red Balloon Mystery was frequently my opening sequence being the perfect ice-breaker to get the show off to a good start.
I showed a jumbo sized envelope with a small window on one side, through which could be seen the colourful back of a single jumbo card, which I claimed was a picture of a new secret weapon that helped to keep me cool, eventually the audience encouraged me to show it to them, and after thus catching their interest, I obliged with much audience laughter; showing it was a picture of a red deflated balloon that I used to let air out over my face to to cool me down before my show.
The trouble was I had lost my puff to blow it up again ready for my next performance, perhaps everyone would help me by blowing it up via their magic breaths. The picture was replaced inside the envelope and everyone was encouraged to keep taking deep breaths and blowing really hard, inflating the balloon. Then eventually the picture was shown and the red balloon was magically inflated bringing cheers and laughter from everyone!
It was a silly, simple idea that never failed, took hardly any room in my showcase and played really big.
At Christmas I used the same idea but with a picture of a small Christmas Pudding, which the audience blew up into a large Pudding to serve to all my guests on Christmas Day. If you are an entertainer I don’t need to tell you your audiences will love this nonsensical idea far more than those expensive illusions, making this one of the best performance investments you will ever make.
Comes complete with envelope, jumbo sized laminated balloon pictures, a set of Christmas pudding pictures (all approx 8 x 5.5”, 20 x 14cms), instructions & full performance rights.
