When Your Magic Trick Fails

We have all been in that situation when we realise that even after lots of practice, something unexpected happens and the trick we are performing goes hopelessly wrong.
At times like these we wish we could magically vanish and save ourselves from the embarrassment. I deal with the problem as follows:
“I must be honest, the trick has gone wrong and when something like that happens I feel very depressed, to lift my spirits I then have to KILL someone, usually a member of the audience!”
I point at someone in the audience who seems to have been enjoying my show saying, “You will do fine sir; don’t worry I will allow you a free choice of the way you want to enter in to the next world!”
I go on to show the back and front of some simple coloured picture cards that I call my Hell pictures, that prove to be of a GUN, a hangman’s NOOSE and various other pictures to everyone’s bemusement as I explain how the chosen kill method will be used.
As the effect continues one picture card is fairly chosen by a process of elimination, held face down and only I take a look as I continue by asking him if he has friends in low places. Adding that he must have and show the chosen picture is a thumbs up sign with the message ‘LIVE’ on it that has mysteriously appeared to save his skin!
The routine naturally raises lots of laughs and also give the impression that I deliberately caused the other effect to fail, so I could have a little fun and audience participation, with a good sport from the audience. A true life-saver that is very easy to do and all ready for you to perform whenever things go wrong as they surely will at some point, when you will utter under your breath, “This is the very best idea I ever purchased from Mr E Enterprises!”
