When Fredrick first performed this effect on me I was stunned, I just didn’t have a clue as to how he did it.
Using a single pack of 52 playing cards plus the joker any spectator simply thought of any playing card and Tommy slowly counted through the face-up cards, until the spectator stopped him at the mentally selected card.
It was obvious no force was used, the card was removed face up from the pack.
The deck was turned face down then Tommy fanned and counted singly to show that the pack consisted of BLUE backs.
Without a single move, the spectator turned over the selected card to discover to his amazement that it had a RED back – truly the odd man out!
This was at a magicians British Ring IBM Convention, and I saw Fredrick perform the effect several times, including once for Tommy Cooper, who loved it.
Everyone was completely baffled and the effect became the talk of the Convention.
I had to have this for my clients; Tommy had several sets all ready to sell and I purchased as many as he could spare on the spot. By the end of that day both my stock and Fredrick’s had sold out.
Needless to say I ordered more from Tommy and did a roaring trade by mail order.
A couple of years later, Fredrick contacted me by telephone, to say that due to illness he was retiring and asked if I was interested in buying the rights to this effect and the other tricks he had invented; we did a deal then sadly Tommy died about six months later.
When Fredrick showed me how the trick worked I couldn’t believe how beautifully we had all been deceived.
